NORMAL, Ill. - Six-foot-nine forward Michael Middlebrooks has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to continue his education and basketball career at Illinois State, head basketball coach Dan Muller announced Wednesday. A Seattle, Wash., native, Middlebrooks will transfer from North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
"Michael is a long, athletic forward who can block shots," Muller said. "His length and quickness will allow him to be a very good defender in our system. Michael has only played basketball for four years, so his offensive game will continue to improve with hard work. He comes from tradition-rich Rainier Beach High School, so he is used to winning."
Middlebrooks, who will have two years of eligibility remaining at Illinois State after spending his last two seasons at North Idaho, averaged 8.9 points and 7.2 rebounds as a sophomore. He ranked 15th among Division I junior college players with a 63.6 shooting percentage from the field. Middlebrooks was also defensively dominant, ranking eighth in NJCAA blocks, with 93 (3.0 per game).
A two-time All-Region 18 selection, Middlebrooks netted double-figures in 15 games as a sophomore, with six double-digit rebounding efforts. Middlebrooks also blocked three or more shots in 19 out of 31 games in his second year at North Idaho.
During his standout prep career, Middlebrooks helped Rainier to a 17-7 record and a No. 17 state ranking as a senior.
