PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Illinois State senior guard Tyler Brown is one of 64 college basketball seniors selected to display his skills in front of NBA scouts at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (P.I.T.), which will take place Wednesday, April 10, through Saturday, April 13, at Churchland High School.
Brown is one of three Missouri Valley Conference players participating in the 2013 P.I.T., joining Wichita State's Carl Hall and Evansville's Colt Ryan. The tournament's 64 players are divided into eight teams, with Brown's squad sponsored by Portsmouth Partnership.
An Owesnboro, Ky., native, Brown is joined on his P.I.T. team by Reginald Buckner (Mississippi), Jake Cohen (Davidson), Kevin Dillard (Dayton), Larry Drew, II (UCLA), Chris Evans (Kent State), Jamelle Hagins (Delaware) and Stan Okoye (Virginia Military Institute). Brown and the Portsmouth Partnership will play the Mike Duman Auto Sales team in the first round of the tournament, Wednesday, April 10, at 8 p.m. CST.
Brown recently finished his senior season as Illinois State's leading scorer, ranking third in the Valley with 18.1 points per game. He was also second in the league with 2.5 three-pointers per game, and fourth with an 80.6 percent free throw average. For his efforts, Brown was named to the 2013 All-Valley Second Team, he garnered National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 16 accolades, and he made it to the championship round of the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition.
At Northern Iowa (March 2), Brown became the 41st member of Illinois State's 1,000-point club. He is also just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 points in his first two seasons as a Redbird, after transferring to ISU from Marshalltown Community College. Brown netted double-figures in 27 games as a senior, and he finished his career ranked sixth on the career three-point percentage list (42.0) and sixth on the career three-pointers made list (159).
Brown and the Redbirds went 18-15 overall and 8-10 in the Valley, with the season ending in a loss to Final Four qualifier Wichita State in the semifinals of the Valley Tournament.
For 60 years the P.I.T. has annually invited 64 of the best senior college basketball players from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. The tournament drew the attention of NBA scouts and general managers in the mid-1970's. Soon the word spread and approximately 200 scouts, general managers and representatives of all 30 NBA teams began to come to see players like John Stockton, Dennis Rodman, Tim Hardaway, Scottie Pippen and others.
Today, scouts from numerous international leagues have joined in on the annual April pilgrimage to Portsmouth. This year, Brown will be one of the 64 players they are there to watch.
