Ekey Earns Spot On Valley Scholar-Athlete Second Team

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior forward Jon Ekey was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Second Team, announced by the league office Monday. Ekey currently boasts a 3.22 grade point average (GPA) in Business Administration.
The junior forward has played in 33 games, including 18 starts, while averaging 6.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 22.9 minutes per game. Ekey is shooting 44.6 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from beyond the arc and 82.1 percent at the free throw line. The Independence, Mo., native scored a season-high 18 points in the win over Morgan State (Dec. 16), and he grabbed a season-best nine rebounds in the win at Southern Illinois (Jan. 20). Ekey has netted double-figures 10 times this season.
Illinois State has featured a representative on the Valley Scholar-Athlete team for four-consecutive seasons, with Alex Rubin and Blake Mishler earning the honor in 2010 and 2011, respectively, followed by back-to-back accolades for Ekey. He was a member of the Scholar-Athlete First Team last year.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Capital One Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA (4.0 scale).
Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. He must have played in 75 percent of his team's games, or played in the MVC Championship this past week.
