Brown Advances To Title Round; Voting Underway For Trip To Atlanta
March 11, 2013
CHICAGO - Illinois State senior guard Tyler Brown came from behind to win his way into the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition championship round, after edging "Final Four" competitor Hal Bateman of Stephen F. Austin Monday. Fans must now cast their daily votes to help Brown win the title and a spot in the Denny's Slam Dunk Competition during the NCAA Final Four weekend.
Fans are allowed to vote once per day by visiting the competition's official Facebook page: facebook.com/CollegeSlam, with final voting ending next Monday, March 18, at noon CST. If Brown wins, he will compete in the Denny's Slam Dunk Competition at the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships in Atlanta during the Final Four weekend, April 4 at 6 p.m. CST, on ESPN. Brown is now facing High Point's Corey Law. Even if fans already voted Monday morning during the "Final Four" round, they are allowed to vote again Monday afternoon.
Sixteen dunkers from across the country were initially selected to compete in the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Facebook bracket, which is a five-week knockout competition. Brown is one of two dunkers still remaining in the contest. While he might be known first for his three-point shooting and defense, Brown's dunking abilities are equally impressive. In his submission video, Brown bounces an alley-oop to himself and finishes with a 360-degree dunk.
Two years in a row, the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker moved on to win the entire Denny's Slam Dunk Competition. Last year, James Justice from Martin Methodist College won the 16-player Dark Horse Dunker bracket before winning in New Orleans, while Jacob Tucker of Illinois College was named the 2011 champion. Both dunkers are now members of the Harlem Globetrotters.
