ST. LOUIS - Illinois State earned two All-Missouri Valley Conference selections for the first time since 2010, as senior forward Jackie Carmichael received first-team recognition, and senior guard Tyler Brown garnered second-team accolades, announced by the conference office Tuesday. In addition to his spot on the All-Valley Team, Carmichael was also named to the All-Defensive Team.
Carmichael became the first Redbird first-team selection since Osiris Eldridge received the honor in 2010, which was the same year that Carmichael was named to the Valley All-Freshman Team. Carmichael was also a second-team and most-improved team choice last season. Meanwhile, Brown's second-team honor was the first of his career. Carmichael and Brown were also both members of last season's All-Tournament Team.
For the second year in a row, Carmichael has led the Missouri Valley Conference in rebounding, with 9.4 boards, which ranks 30th nationally. He is also second on the team and fourth in the conference, with 17.4 points per game. In addition, Carmichael leads the league in blocks, with 1.9 per game, and he ranks ninth in field goal percentage (52.8). His 14 double-doubles rank 13th in the country.
Carmichael has netted double figures in 27 games this season. He has also grabbed 10 or more rebounds 15 times this season, plus he has nine games with three or more blocks. Along with holding the career-blocked shots record (192), the senior forward ranks eighth on ISU's career-scoring list with 1,543 points, 12th on the career-field goal percentage list, fifth on the career-free throws list and fourth on the career-rebounding list. He is also in third place on the Redbird career double-doubles list with 34.
Following his 28-point effort at Northern Iowa Saturday night, Brown now leads Illinois State and ranks third in the Valley and 42nd in the nation with 18.1 points per game. Thanks to Brown and Carmichael's combined scoring prowess, the Redbirds are the only team in the league with two players who rank among the top five in scoring. Brown is also third in the league, with 2.4 three-pointers averaged per game, and fourth with an 80.6 percent free throw average.
At Northern Iowa, Brown became the 41st member of Illinois State's 1,000-point club. He is also just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 points in his first two seasons as a Redbird, after transferring to ISU from Marshalltown Community College. The Owensboro, Ky., native has now netted double-figures in 11-consecutive games, including 26 this season. Brown is also the active-leader in three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage, plus he ranks sixth on the career three-point percentage list and eighth on the career three-pointers made list.
Carmichael, Brown and the Redbirds are preparing for their Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Northern Iowa Friday, March 8, at 8:35 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (309) 438-8000.
