Illinois State to Participate in 2011 Cancun Challenge

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Illinois State men's basketball team will join Illinois, Richmond and Rutgers to complete the Riviera bracket of the 2011 Cancun Challenge, as announced by Triple Crown Sports Friday. The Redbirds will face Rutgers on Nov. 22, 2011, in the Galactic Ballroom at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico.

Depending on the result against Rutgers, Illinois State will play either Illinois or Richmond the following day, on Nov. 23. In addition to these two games, as part of the 2011 Cancun Challenge, which is in its fourth year, Illinois State will host two home games on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.

"We are excited to be accepted into the Cancun Challenge," ISU head coach Tim Jankovich said. "We worked very hard to become involved with the tournament and it should be really exciting for our players, and our fans."

The Mayan Division features Hampton, Lipscomb, Sacred Heart and Southern Illinois Edwardsville. ISU will play SIUE on Nov. 17 and Lipscomb on Nov. 19.

"We are thrilled with the teams who will be participating in the event," said Cancun Challenge Tournament Director Brent Amick. "We feel it will be a very competitive tournament as it has been in the past."

This unique tournament is held at the convention center at the beautiful all-inclusive beach front resort of the Moon Palace.. Previous Rivera Division champions include Vanderbilt (2008), Kentucky (2009) and Missouri (2010). Previous Mayan Division champions include Sam Houston State (2009) and North Florida (2010).

The Cancun Challenge is owned and operated by Fort Collins, Colo., based Triple Crown Sports, Inc., which also owns and operates other women's college basketball tournaments in Cancun, as well as the Preseason and Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournaments.



Illinois State has never faced Richmond, Rutgers or Lipscomb. The Redbirds have played Illinois seven times with the Fighting Illini winning all seven contests. ISU and Illinois have not played each other since the 80-73 overtime game in Champaign, Ill., on Jan. 3, 2004.
