Watch the Will Robinson Tribute Video
Jan. 25, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State Athletics fans now have an unique opportunity to watch a special tribute video to Redbird coaching legend Will Robinson. During halftime of Saturday's Illinois State-Southern Illinois men's basketball game (ISU won, 70-63), the ISU Athletics Department unveiled a special tribute video to Robinson, who in 1970, became the first black head men's basketball coach at a NCAA Division I school.
The video is free to view, and it is the same tribute video that was shown at halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game.
At the end of the tribute video, Redbird Athletics announced that during the summer 2009, a bronze statue of Will Robinson and Doug Collins, Robinson's most famous pupil at Illinois State, will be unveiled in front of the north entrance of Redbird Arena.
On Friday, the ISU Athletics Department surprised Collins when it showed him the Robinson-Collins statue for the first time. The statue is currently being built at the Rottblatt-Amrany Fine Art Studio in Highpoint, Ill. GoRedbirds.com was there for the entire statue presentation and has an exclusive video of Collins' first reaction to see the statue.
