NORMAL, Ill. - Despite junior Jackie Carmichael posting his seventh career double-double, Illinois State (5-3), fell to UNC Wilmington (1-5) Saturday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.

Carmichael led Illinois State with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jon Ekey and junior Tyler Brown, both scored three field goals, including two three-pointers apiece. Junior Anthony Cousin posted seven points and five assists.

UNC Wilmington outrebounded the Redbirds, 41-31, and was lead by Keith Rendelman, who grabbed a game-high 14 boards and added 13 points. Adam Smith led all scorers with 19 points, and Trevor Deloach finished with 11.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 and kept Illinois State scoreless until the first media timeout, partially thanks to a 6-0 rebounding advantage through the first four minutes of the game. After a pair of baskets from Carmichael, ISU cut the lead to 9-5, until UNCW pushed the score to 18-9 after a tip-in by Rendelman.

Illinois State then used a 10-2 run over 2:30 of play to cut the UNCW lead to 20-19 at the 5:36 mark, after eight-straight points from Carmichael. UNCW scored seven straight points to extend the lead to 27-19, before Ekey made the first three pointer of the game for the Redbirds, 27-22, with just under two minutes left. The Seahawks answered with five-straight points to take a ten-point lead, 32-22, before Cousin hit a free throw with less than a second left to make the score 32-23 at the half.

The Redbirds scored the first six points of the second half after back-to-back three pointers from Ekey and Brown and cut the lead to one point, 32-31, at the 15:49 mark. UNCW's Adam Smith hit a three-pointer to briefly stop the Redbird momentum, but Cousin's layup and free throw cut the lead to one point at, 35-34, with 14:34 left to play in the game.

The Seahwaks went on a 14-4 run after a jumper by Deloach to extend the lead to 49-38 at the 8:34 mark of the second half. UNCW then took its largest lead of the game at 54-42, after a jumper by Freddie Jackson.

Illinois State answered with a 10-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Cousin and a layup by Nic Moore that cut the UNCW lead to 54-52 at the 1:47 mark. The Seahawks posted a layup, followed by seven successful foul shots to bring the score to 62-52. A final layup from Johnny Hill made the final score 63-54 in favor of UNC Wilmington.
