NORMAL, Ill. - Despite recording his seventh double-digit scoring effort of the season, Bryant Allen's 17 points were not enough as Illinois State men's (17-12, 8-9 MVC) fell to nationally-ranked Wichita State (25-4, 15-2 MVC) Wednesday night. The loss for the Redbirds snapped a six-game home winning streak on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
John Wilkins connected for nine points and brought down eight rebounds for the Redbirds and Tyler Brown added eight points for ISU, while Anthony Cousin and Jordan Threloff each scored seven. Wichita State had a slight advantage on the boards, outrebounding Illinois State, 33-32. The Redbirds made 38 percent of their shots from the field, while the Shockers hit 47 percent of their field goal attempts. Joe Ragland led WSU with 14 points and four assists.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 10-2 start, after Touré Murray scored five points of the first two-plus minutes of the game. WSU extended the lead to 17-6 by the second media timeout after a layup by Jake White. Illinois State cut the lead to six points at 21-15 at the 8:45 mark, after ISU put together a quick 7-2 run that was capped off with a three-pointer from Allen. After another three-pointer by Allen at the 6:06 mark, the Redbirds cut the lead to 24-20 to cap off an 8-3 run. A push from Wichita State moved the lead back into a double-digits after an 8-2 run, finishing the first half with a score of 34-22.
The second half began with a quick three-pointer from Wichita State, pushing the lead to 15 points over ISU, 37-22. Illinois State, led by a three-pointer from Brown, went on a 10-2 run to narrow the lead to eight points, 39-32, with 15:26 left in the game. ISU and WSU traded points until a 12-5 Shocker run, that included back-to-back threes, lengthened the Shocker's lead, 57-40, and forced the Redbirds to call a timeout.
ISU answered WSU's 6-0 run with a run of its own. A three-pointer from Cousin and quick layup from Threloff cut the lead to 11 points, 57-46, with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest. Layups from Wilkins and Allen cut Wichita State's lead to single digits, 62-53, but WSU continued to add points to the board, as ISU was scoreless for the final five minutes of the game. The Redbirds ran out of time and lost their final home game of the regular season, 68-55. With the win, Wichita State recorded their 15th-straight victory over the last 16 games.
Illinois State will complete the regular season Saturday at Bradley. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., at Carver Arena.
