Jan. 1, 2012
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Illinois State men's basketball team opened the New Year by running into a hot-shooting Southern Illinois game and fell 86-71 in Missouri Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon at SIU Arena. The Salukis shot 50.8 percent from the field en route to 86 points, both season-highs against the Redbirds this season.
The loss dropped Illinois State to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while SIU improved to 4-9 and 1-1, respectively. Tyler Brown paced the Redbirds with 15 points, while Jon Ekey added 13 and Bryant Allen tossed in a career-best 12 points. Treg Setty led SIU with 20 points and T.J. Lindsay added 18.
With an eight-point halftime lead, Southern Illinois pushed its lead to 48-32 after opening the second half with an 8-0 run. The Salukis built a 22-point advantage, at 59-37, following Lindsay's fifth three-pointer of the game. Illinois State got to within 12 points, at 67-55, thanks to Allen's third three-pointer, but the Redbirds could not get any closer.
SIU led 10-8 at the 14:37 mark, but used a 10-0 run to build an early 20-8 advantage. The Redbirds responded with an 11-2 spurt, which included points from four different players, to close the deficit, 22-19, with 8:37 left in the half. The Salukis maintained the lead throughout the first half, as the Redbirds surrendered the most first half points they have allowed all season and trailed, 40-32, at the break.
The defeat was the most lopsided loss in the series since the Redbirds dropped a 68-49 decision to the Salukis, on Dec. 29, 2006, in Normal, Ill.
The Redbirds will wrap up their two-game road swing Wednesday night, when Illinois State travels to league-leading Missouri State for a 7:05 p.m. contest.
