Baseball Offseason Birdcast #1: Brett Kay

NORMAL, Ill. - Senior shortstop Brett Kay stopped by the Horton Field House podcast studio for the first edition of the Baseball Offseason Birdcast with ISU baseball play-by-play announcer Ronan O'Shea. The 15-minute interview covers Kay's four-year career at Illinois State, his two-year stint with the Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods League and his offseason workout regimen.
Kay appeared in 50 games for the Redbirds in 2012, making 41 starts. He hit .269/.329/.343 with two home runs and 16 RBI. He led the team with 11 sacrifice bunts and stole 14-of-16 bases. Defensively, Kay posted a .985 fielding percentage at shortstop.
The Arlington Heights, Ill., native spent this past summer competing for the Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods League and won the Rawlings "Finest in the Field" Award as the league's top defensive shortstop. He also captured the Rawlings "Big Stick" Award as the top offensive shortstop in the 16-team league, batting .320/.388/.415 with one home run, 14 doubles and three triples.
Illinois State opens the 2013 season, Feb. 15, at Memphis.
