NORMAL, Ill. - Construction crews began work this week on removing the playing surface at Duffy Bass Field, as the Illinois State baseball program prepares for the installation of a Fieldturf playing surface for the 2013 baseball season.

"We are very excited that the Fieldturf project has begun," head coach Mark Kingston said. "It will positively impact us in so many ways. We appreciate everyone that made this a reality and can't wait to start playing on it."

The new playing surface will feature a Fieldturf infield and natural grass, with an improved drainage system, in the outfield. The pitchers mound will remain dirt. The improved playing surface will limit rain delays and cancellations, as well as allow the baseball team to practice outdoors on mild winter days.

Illinois State will host the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, May 21-25, at Duffy Bass Field. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
