NORMAL, Ill. - Redbird pitchers Dan Savas and Chris Razo were named CollegeBaseballInsider.com/Louisville Slugger All-American Honorable Mention selections, as announced by CollegeBaseballInsider.com co-rounder Phil Stanton Friday. Savas and Razo combined to go 18-2 with four saves in 2013, helping guide Illinois State to its first outright Missouri Valley Conference title in program history.
“This is a great honor for these guys have very deserved,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “They pitched us to a championship and should be proud of this recognition.”
Savas shined for the 2013 Redbirds. The right-hander led Illinois State with a perfect 10-0 record, compiling a 1.79 ERA in 15 starts. He fired five complete-games, including a pair of shutouts. Savas paced the Redbirds in innings pitched (100.1), strike outs (98) and lowest batting average-against (.180) and was named a First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. Razo opened the 2013 season as Illinois State’s closer, going 4-for-4 in save chances while maintaining a sub-2.00 earned run average. The Chillicothe, Ill., native made 11 starts, going 8-2 with five complete games, four of which came versus Valley opponents. He outdueled two fellow Major League Baseball draft selections, beating Nick Petree of Missouri State and Sean Manaea of Indiana State in consecutive Valley starts. The right-hander finished the season with a 1.71 ERA, posted 79 strike outs in 89.1 innings and limited opponents to a .206 batting average. Razo was selected in the 24th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, and currently pitches for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League.
