NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head baseball coach Mark Kingston awarded junior closer Jeremy Rhoades the Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year, as announced Wednesday by the Illinois State athletics department.

“Jeremy has worked extremely hard to become a significant member of our team,” Kingston said. “He has become a first-team all-Valley performer while also excelling in the classroom. He is a very nice match for this prestigious honor.”

Rhoades emerged as the closer on Illinois State’s 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Champion squad. He made 27 appearances, all in relief, going 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA and a team-best six saves. In 41.0 innings, Rhoades struck out 37 and walked 10, limiting opponents to a .224 batting average. The Wheaton, Ill., native fired 4.1 perfect innings, with three strike outs, earning the win in relief May 18 at Southern Illinois, as ISU won its first outright MVC title. The right-hander has spent the summer pitching in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Established in 2010, the Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship is presented to one male student-athlete in the college of business. With a preference to a baseball player, the recipient must have earned a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater during the academic school year.

Heaton lettered in baseball at ISU from 1965 until 1968. A business education major, he earned dean's list distinction six times and dedicated his life to teaching business and coaching baseball. The scholarship was established in 2010 by the Heaton Family, and Stephen's wife, Nancy, who is also an Illinois State alum. A plaque in Heaton's honor was permanently adorned to the Duffy Bass Field concourse May 5.

The Heaton Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
