NORMAL, Ill. - For the third consecutive season, senior outfielder Chad Hinshaw was been awarded the Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship, as announced Thursday by the Illinois State athletics department.

The Bloomington, Ill., product appeared in 51 games last season, primarily as ISU's leadoff hitter and starting center fielder. He was a catalyst for an offense that averaged nearly seven runs-per-game, batting .248, while leading the team in on-base percentage (.442), runs (43) and stolen bases (23-for-26). His league-best .375 batting average in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament earned him MVC All-Tournament Team accolades. Defensively, Hinshaw extending his streak to 160 career games without committing an error, in addition to fielding 125 putouts with two assists.

Established in 2010, the Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship is presented to one male student-athlete in the college of business. With a preference to a baseball player, the recipient must have earned a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater during the academic school year.

As a health education major, Hinshaw maintained a 3.62 GPA. He is a six-time AFNI Honor Roll member and was named a 2012 Missouri Valley Conference First Team Scholar-Athlete. The AFNI Honor Roll is a distinction for Illinois State student-athletes that have earned a 3.0 or greater GPA during the spring and fall semester.


 

 

Heaton lettered in baseball at ISU from 1965 until 1968. A business education major, he earned dean's list distinction six times and dedicated his life to teaching business and coaching baseball. The scholarship was established in 2010 by the Heaton Family, and Stephen's wife, Nancy, who is also an ISU alum. A plaque in Heaton's honor was permanently adorned to the Duffy Bass Field concourse May 5.
