Savas Named Duffy Bass Endowment Recipient
July 16, 2013
NORMAL, Ill.- Illinois State head baseball coach Mark Kingston awarded redshirt junior Dan Savas the Duffy Bass Endowed Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year, for his dedication on the field of play and in the classroom.
“This is a very nice honor for Dan, and is well deserved,” Kingston said. “He was a key part of our championship season. He perfectly exemplifies the competitiveness that Coach Bass stood for.”
Savas shined for the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Champion Redbirds in 2013. The right-hander led the Redbirds with a perfect 10-0 record, compiling a 1.79 ERA in 15 starts. He fired five complete-games, including a pair of shutouts. Savas paced the Redbirds in innings pitched (100.1), strike outs (98) and lowest batting average-against (.180) and was named a First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. The Rosemont, Ill., native is an accounting major and is currently playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
The scholarship is named after the former Illinois State skipper who guided the program to more than 700 wins and the 1969 College Division National Championship. It is awarded each year to one ISU junior or senior baseball player. Bass retired from Illinois State in 1988 and passed away in 2008. Following its multimillion dollar renovation in 2009, ISU's home baseball stadium was dedicated as Duffy Bass Field.
The Duffy Bass Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
