July 12, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - For the second consecutive season, Illinois State pitcher JD Learnard has been named the recipient of the Raymond W. Fairchild Endowed Scholarship, as announced Wednesday by the Illinois State Athletics Department.
"JD is a model student-athlete and represents the university well," pitching coach Bill Mohl said. "He has emerged as a leader on the pitching staff and is well-respected by his teammates."
The Fairmount, Ill., native did not pitch last season after undergoing labrum surgery. As a sophomore in 2011, Learnard went 8-2 with a 4.04 ERA, appearing in 17 games while making 14 starts. He struck out 41 batters over 78 innings and limited opponents to a .283 batting average. Learnard amassed a perfect 5-0 conference record, earning Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention accolades. He has a career mark of 13-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 36 appearances for the Redbirds.
In the classroom, Learnard has maintained a 3.23 cumulative grade-point average in biological sciences. He is currently pitching for the Lexington Snipes of the Chicago Suburban Baseball League.
The Fairchild Endowment is a scholarship awarded each academic year to one Redbird baseball player who excels in the classroom and on the field of play. It is named after former Illinois State President Raymond W. Fairchild, who guided the university from 1933 to 1954.
