Hinshaw Selected to MVC Scholar-Athlete Team
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior Chad Hinshaw was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the conference office Thursday. Fellow outfielder Eric Aguilera received honorable mention distinction.
"We are very proud of Chad and Eric because they take great pride in performing on and off the field," Illinois State head coach Mark Kingston said. "It is not easy being a student-athlete, so to excel as they have is very impressive."
Hinshaw appeared in 51 games this season, primarily as the team's leadoff hitter and starting center fielder. He was a catalyst for an offense that averaged nearly seven runs-per-game, batting .248, while leading the team in on-base percentage (.442), runs (43) and stolen bases (23-for-26). Defensively, Hinshaw extending his streak to 160 career games without an error, in addition to fielding 125 putouts with two assists. His league-best .375 batting average in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament earned him MVC All-Tournament Team accolades. As a health education major, Hinshaw maintained a 3.62 grade-point average (GPA). The Bloomington, Ill., product is a six-time AFNI Honor Roll member and last season was a Valley Scholar-Athlete honorable mention.
Aguilera played in all 52 Illinois State games this season, making 49 starts. The slugging outfielder hit .330 with a .355 on-base percentage and team-leading seven home runs. His league-best 33 conference hits gave him the MVC batting title with a .407 average in conference games. The Cary, Ill., native established a 3.27 GPA as a management major and is a three-time AFNI Honor Roll member.
The AFNI Honor Roll is a distinction for Illinois State student-athletes that have earned a 3.0 or greater GPA during the spring and fall semesters. The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. The honor was voted on by the conference's baseball sports information directors.
