Facing elimination, the No. 4 Redbirds will play No. 5 Evansville Thursday at 9:07 a.m. The Redbirds (32-18), who have won 10 of their last 12 games, will now have to win four-consecutive games to earn the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship title. If ISU beats Evansville (32-26) Thursday morning, the Redbirds will have a rematch with No. 8 Creighton (24-28) Thursday at 4:07 p.m.
Despite 2-for-4 efforts by Eric Aguilera and Matt Mirabal, Illinois State was forced into the loser's bracket of the State Farm MVC Championship with an 11-5 loss to No. 8 Creighton Wednesday afternoon at Hammons Field. Illinois State's 9:07 a.m. matchup with Evansville Thursday will see junior right-hander Brad Sorkin (4-3, 4.21 ERA) face Evansville left-hander Kyle Freeland (4-5, 4.57 ERA). The pitching matchup is the same as last Saturday's series-final, which the Redbirds won, 8-7 in 12 innings. Neither starter factored into that decision. Thursday will mark the Redbirds' fifth game against Evansville out of their last six contests, with the Redbirds going 3-1 against the Purple Aces so far this season. ISU beat UE in the first game of the State Farm MVC Tournament Tuesday morning.
Live audio coverage of Thursday's game will be available on GoRedbirds.com and WJBC.com. Additionally, a live telecast will be streamed on ESPN3.com.
