Savas Named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week

MAY 19, 2013

ST. LOUIS, Mo.– Illinois state right-handed starter Dan Savas has been named the Missouri Valley Conference pitcher of the week, as announced by the Valley offices in St. Louis Sunday. It marks the second pitcher of the week honor this season for Savas, and the fourth total for a Redbird starter this season.

Savas fired his fourth complete-game victory, his second in as many weeks, as Illinois State clinched a share of the MVC title with a thrilling 2-0 win at Southern Illinois Friday. The right-hander pitched a career-high nine innings, blanking the Salukis on just four hits. He struck out a season-best eight and stranded the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth inning. The win improved Savas to 9-0 on the season, tying the record for most wins in a single season for a Redbird pitcher since Illinois State became a NCAA Division I baseball program. The Rosemont, Ill., who native missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery, finished the conference season with a 6-0 record, a 1.73 ERA and two complete-games over seven Valley starts.

The Redbirds, who claimed the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference outright title for the first time in program history Saturday, return to action in opening round action of the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The Redbirds, who are the top-seeded team in the tournament, play eight seed Bradley at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday night at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill.
