NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State baseball team met its BaseBald Day fundraising goal of $5,000 Wednesday morning, and as a result, every member of the team, including coaches, will shave their heads following Sunday's 1 p.m. game against Southern Illinois. The postgame head-shaving ceremony will take place on the main concourse at Duffy Bass Field.
"Seeing children suffering as a result of cancer breaks my heart," Illinois State head baseball coach Mark Kingston said. "For us to be able to help the St. Baldrick's Foundation by raising this money is very important to our team. We are all very excited to be a part of BaseBald Day."
It took less than a month for Illinois State to meet its $5,000 goal. Individuals who donated at least $100 will get to take the first swipe of a team member's hair, while people who gave at least $500 will get to swipe an assistant coach's hair. One anonymous contributor who donated $1,000 will have the opportunity to swipe Kingston's hair. After donors make the initial swipes, BaseBald Day sponsors Hair Cuttery on Oakland Avenue in Bloomington, Ill., and Mitch/Jenni's Salon and Spa will complete the buzz-jobs.
The purpose of BaseBald Day is to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation - an organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. BaseBald, a division of the St. Baldrick's Foundation, was started by members of the 2007 North Carolina baseball team who shaved their heads in an effort to raise money for 18-year-old teammate Chase Jones, who was diagnosed with cancer. Illinois State pitching coach Bill Mohl worked side-by-side with Jones for seven years at the Rick Jones Baseball Camp through Tulane in New Orleans, and Mohl is spearheading ISU's event.
While the $5,000 goal has already been met, individuals can still donate to the BaseBald day cause by clicking here. Any barber interested in becoming an "official barber" and/or sponsor of the event should contact Marketing and Promotions graduate assistant Lisa Juliano at email@example.com for more information. A $100 donation is required to the St. Baldrick's Foundation to become a sponsor for the event. Admission to the May 6 BaseBald game, along with every game at Duffy Bass Field this season, will be free.
Media members are invited to attend the postgame head shaving event, which will occur immediately following the conclusion of Sunday's game against Southern Illinois. With the game beginning at 1 p.m., the shaving will likely occur between 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Media organizations can obtain further details by contacting ISU Athletics Communications baseball contact John Twork by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling (309) 438-5746.
