NORMAL, Ill. – Redbird senior shortstop Brett Kay was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the Valley offices in St. Louis. Kay batted .632/.696/.842 with two doubles, one triple and six RBI as Illinois State went a perfect 5-0.
Kay was inserted into the leadoff spot Friday night versus Bradley and had a nine-hit weekend against the Braves. Kay’s bases-clearing three-run triple in the eighth inning Saturday gave Illinois State its first lead of the game. The Redbirds trailed 5-0 after five innings and went on to win 9-5. Kay added one stolen base, drew two walks and was hit by two pitches. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native played error-free defense for the Redbirds.
Illinois State returns to action Tuesday night at Duffy Bass Field when the Redbirds welcome Illinois Wesleyan for the Horenberger-Bass Classic. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. and admission is free.
