MACOMB, Ill. - David Fallon went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs to lead Illinois State past Western Illinois, 9-4, Tuesday afternoon at Al D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb, Ill. By beating WIU (20-33), the Redbirds (32-16) matched their 2010 win-total, and finish the non-conference schedule with a 22-8 record against out-of-league opponents.

Joe Claver (1-0) earned his first-career victory, while Brad Sorkin, Jacob Wielebnicki, Justin Hauer and Kenny Long teamed up to limit the Leathernecks to four runs on five hits. WIU's Garrett Bolt (0-3) suffered the loss.

"I thought Claver threw well, with only three earned runs," Redbird head coach Mark Kingston said. "Our defense was solid, although I would have liked to see us get a few more hits."

Illinois State scored three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Fallon hit a one-out single, followed by back-to-back walks issued to Kevin Tokarski and Tyler McNeely. Ryan Court then drove in Fallon and Tokarski with a single, and advanced to second on a throwing error charged to Western Illinois' left fielder. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Mike Hollenbeck was hit by a pitch, forcing McNeely home.

The Redbirds added to their lead in the second inning as Chad Hinshaw led off with a walk and proceeded to steal second base. Hinshaw then stole third base and scored as the catcher's throw to third was off-line, allowing Hinshaw to cross home plate and give ISU a 4-0 advantage.

Hinshaw again led off with a walk in the fourth inning and stole second base. Fallon drove in Hinshaw with a double, and Fallon came home on a fielder's choice by Zach Amrein. Brock Stewart added two runs with a double that plated Tokarski and Amrein. The Redbirds tallied another run in the fifth, as Fallon doubled-home Hinshaw, who led off the inning with a walk.

Western Illinois scored its first three runs of the game in the fifth inning on a Jake Moore RBI double and a two-RBI single by Austin Cowen. The Leathernecks scored their fourth and final run in the sixth inning with a RBI single by Matt Igara.

Following their five-game road trip, the Redbirds return to Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill., this weekend for their final regular-season Missouri Valley Conference series, with games against Evansville Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Friday at 4:30 p.m. (rescheduled from an original 2 p.m. start) and Saturday at 1 p.m. Illinois State senior recognition day is slated for Saturday.
