CARBONDALE, Ill. – Senior right-hander Chris Razo fired his fifth complete game this season, four of which have come in Valley games, as Illinois State (34-18, 14-5 MVC) defeated Southern Illinois (24-29, 6-13), 4-3, Thursday afternoon at Abe Martin Field. The Redbirds need just one victory over their final two games to earn a share of the Missouri Valley Conference crown. If they win both games they will win the conference outright for the first time in program history.

Razo (7-1), allowed three runs, all earned, on nine hits, with four strike outs and just two walks. He improved to 5-1 with four complete games in MVC action. Southern Illinois starter Cody Forsythe (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in seven innings.

The Redbirds tallied just three hits in the victory, but all three were home runs. Brock Stewart collected on a two-run home run, his third of the year, and Brett Kay and Chad Hinshaw went back-to-back in the sixth inning to give the Redbirds the lead for good.

SIU rallied for two runs on four hits in the first inning, but Illinois State immediately responded with a two-run second inning. With two walks, Mike Hollenbeck drew a walk. One batter later, Stewart launched a towering home run over the fence in right to knot the score at 2-2.

Forsythe settled into a grove, retiring the next 11 Redbird batters before Kay and Hinshaw went back-to-back in the sixth. The home run for Kay was his third this season and his first since March 17. The home run for Hinshaw was his fourth in 2013 and the ninth of his four-year Redbird career.

Razo worked perfect innings in the third, fifth, eighth and ninth. He collected two strike outs in the final frame to secure the victory.

With the win Illinois State has clinched at least a two-seed in next week’s Missouri Valley Conference Championship, which runs May 21-25 at Duffy Bass Field. The Redbirds will look to secure at least a share of the MVC crown when they return to action Friday at Abe Martin Field for game two versus SIU. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and live radio will be available on GoRedbirds.com, WJBC.com and WZND 103.3-FM. Additionally, live video is available through RedbirdHD.TV.
