Salukis Top Redbirds in Series Opener, 9-5
April 24, 2009
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois couldn't get a hit off Illinois State starter Ryan Camp through four innings but an error and three hits in the fifth led to three runs and awakened the Salukis offense in a 9-5 win at Abe Martin Field Friday afternoon. The win snapped an eight-game, Missouri Valley Conference losing streak for the Salukis, and ended a five-game MVC win streak with Camp on the mound for the Redbirds.
Camp walked four batters but didn't allow a base hit or a run through four innings as both teams dueled to a draw into the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Bullock led off the fifth with a double for SIU's first hit and later scored the first of three Saluki (16-23, 3-8 MVC) runs on a throwing error by Camp.
Illinois State (19-14, 9-5 MVC) answered with four runs in the top of the sixth inning and took a 4-3 lead, but Southern Illinois chased Camp from the game and went ahead for good with five more runs in the sixth. Southern added a run in the seventh and the Birds attempted a rally in the top of the ninth but could only plate one run.
Collin Salzenstein and Mike Stalowy both went 2-for-3 in the contest and scored a run each. Ryan Court helped the Redbirds take their first and only lead of the game with a two-RBI double off the base of the wall in the sixth.
Four Salukis collected multiple hits and Chris Murphy finished the game with four RBI. David Kington earned the win in relief for SIU.
The Redbirds and Salukis meet in the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. Corey Maines (6-2, 3.22 ERA) is slated to start Saturday's game for the Illinois State against Jimmy Cornell (2-1, 2.51 ERA).
