Coach Kingston Postgame Interview
Chad Hinshaw and Kyle Stanton led the Redbird offense, recording two hits each. Hishaw had two triples and one RBI, while Stanton had two singles. Brad Sorkin was credited with the loss after hurling 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out two.
The Bears got the offense started right from the first pitch, as Tate Matheny hit a solo home run to start the game. Luke Voit doubled down the left field line and scored off of a Koby Peebles single, adding another run to the top of the frame. MSU threatened again in the top of the fourth, after a two out double by Travis McComack. Sorkin closed the door to end the threat, forcing Joey Hawkins to fly out to center field.
Illinois State opened its scoring in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a triple from Hinshaw, and an Aguilera sacrifice fly. After the RBI by Aguilera, the Redbirds trailed the Bears by a score of 2-1. They would threaten again in the fifth inning after a leadoff single by Stanton, however they were unable to plate him from second base after a DeJong walk.
Missouri State added another run in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth, stretching its lead to seven, 8-1. The Redbirds cut the deficit to five, 8-3, after a RBI triple by Hinshaw and a single by Aguilera, driving Hinshaw in from third. That was as close as ISU came to the lead, as the Redbirds fell to Missouri State 8-3.
The Redbirds are next scheduled to play non-conference foe Northern Illinois, Tuesday, April 9. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
