March 25, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's Kevin Tokarski ripped two base hits and drove home three runs, as the Redbirds posted a 6-2 non-conference victory over Webster Sunday afternoon at Duffy Bass Field.
The Redbirds (15-6) rallied with three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, while the arms of Dylan Craig and Brad Sorkin kept Webster (10-8) at bay. Craig improved his record to 4-0 on the season after pitching five innings and allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out six. Sorkin collected his first save of the year after throwing four scoreless innings.
The Gorlocks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Alex Kazmierski doubled home Tom Henke all the way from first base, who had singled earlier in the frame. The lead held up until the bottom of the fourth when Illinois State's Zach Johnson belted his fourth home run of the season. Johnson also plated Kyle Stanton, who reached on an error to open the inning. Johnson also finished with a pair of hits on the day.
ISU added another run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Tokarski singled down the left field line with two outs to drive home Chad Hinshaw. Webster threatened in the top of the fifth, but Craig was able to limit the damage to only one run, as the Redbirds continued to lead, 3-2.
Following a pair of walks in the sixth inning, Tokarski doubled to center field to knock two more runs home and lift the Illinois State lead, 5-2. Tokarski later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ty Wiesemeyer.
Webster's Steven Dooley suffered the loss and his record dropped to 0-3 on the campaign.
Illinois State will return to action Tuesday when the Redbirds host in-state rival Illinois on Duffy Bass Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
