WINTER HAVEN, FLA. - Despite a two-run rally in the ninth inning, the Illinois State Redbirds (4-7) fell to the Miami RedHawks (3-6), 4-2, Saturday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Tournament in Winter Haven, Fla. The Redbirds stranded 11 runners in defeat.

Will Headean (0-3) suffered the loss for Illinois State. He allowed four runs, two earned, in four innings and struck out four.  Brooks Fiala (1-2) picked up the victory for Miami, working 7.2 scoreless innings. He struck out five. Seth Varner (1) retired two batters for the save in the ninth inning. Additionally, JD Learnard threw three scoreless innings for Illinois State and struck out a season-best four batters.

Miami scored first on two hits in the third inning. Dan Walsh scored on Alex Johnson’s two-out, RBI-single off Headean. The RedHawks added three more runs in the fourth inning. Nate Bowles’ RBI-single made it 2-0 Miami. The RedHawks tallied two more runs when Bowles and Adam Yacek touched home following a fielding error on Brock Stewart.

The Redbirds left two men on the base in the first inning, and stranded one in the third and fourth innings. Illinois State put men on first and second with one out in the fifth inning, before Fiala worked out of a jam to keep Illinois State off the board. Illinois State left runners on in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings as well.


 

 

The Redbirds rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, with Brett Kay collecting an infield RBI-single to score Stewart. ISU loaded the bases with one out before Miami turned to Varner. Zac Johnson lifted a sacrifice-fly to left field, scoring Daniel Dwyer. Varner then struck out Aguilera looking to close the game.

The Redbirds close play in Winter Haven Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. CST first pitch against Fairfield. Dylan Craig (0-1, 8.31 ERA) starts for Illinois State and xx counters for the Stags.
