WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Ty Wiesemeyer went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, as the Redbirds held off Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, 3-2, Friday night at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Redbirds (5-3) played the Mavericks (1-1) instead of Mount St. Mary's, as was originally scheduled, after the Mount was forced to cancel because of a delayed flight. Illinois State held on to win by its most narrow margin of the season.

"As I told the team, close games are good, and they make you better if you handle them the right way," head coach Mark Kingston said. "I think we're better for playing this close game."

Minnesota State cracked the scoring column first when Ben Kincaid doubled home Zach Rowles, who had doubled to lead off the game, to claim a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. An inning later, Illinois State tied the game on Wiesemeyer's base hit, which scored Ryan Court from third base.

The Redbirds took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an error by Maverick right fielder Aaron Berner on a line drive by ISU freshman Brock Stewart. The error allowed Wiesmeyer to reach third base and eventually score on a wild pitch by T.J. Larson.

Wild pitches spurred another ISU run in the bottom of the fifth, as Chad Hinshaw doubled to open the inning and later scored following two wild pitches by Maverick relief pitcher Josh Kubitschek to give the Redbirds a 3-1 lead.

ISU's Ryan Camp earned his first win of the season by scattering six hits and allowing only one run over five innings. He struck out four batters without a walk. Minnesota State took advantage of a pair of errors to draw within one run, 3-2, in the top of the sixth.

Closer Kenny Long came on in the ninth, retiring the side in order, and earning his second save of the season.

The Redbirds will continue competition at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Saturday, with a 4 p.m. CT first-pitch against Xavier. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
