JONESBORO, Ark. Jeremy Rhoades fired four strikeouts and secured a six-out save as Illinois State (2-1, 0-0 MVC) topped Arkansas State (3-2, 0-0 Sun Belt), 4-3, Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium. Dan Savas (2-0) picked up his second-straight victory and the Redbirds offense clubbed eight hits in the win.

Savas allowed two runs, one earned, over six innings with four strikeouts and three walks to tally the 15th victory of his career. David Suarez added one strikeout and allowed one run in an inning of work before Rhoades worked the final two frames. Arkansas State starter Bradley Wallace was chased from the game after four-plus innings of four-run, six-hit ball. The Red Wolves used three relief pitchers to blank the Redbirds over the final four innings.

Arkansas State threatened early and loaded the bases in the second inning before Savas induced a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play. It was one of two double plays Savas collected in the game.

The Redbirds got on the scoreboard first with one run in the third inning. Dennis Colón opened the frame with a single and scored on Paul DeJong’s groundout. Colón finished the game with two hits and one walk. Arkansas State answered with a run-scoring single from Matt Burges in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Illinois State loaded the bases on an infield single from Sean Beesley, a single from Daniel Dwyer and a walk from DeJong. Brock Stewart launched a two-run double off the wall in right to give Illinois State a 3-1 advantage and chase Wallace from the game. Later in the fifth, Cody Voelker drove home DeJong on a groundout to make it 4-1 Redbirds.

The Red Wolves added one run off Savas in the fifth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning. With one out and one on, Savas induced a 6-4-3 double play from Red Wolves leadoff hitter Dustin Jones to preserve the lead.

Arkansas State scored once in the seventh off Suarez, but faltered versus Rhoades with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth. Rhoades fanned designed hitter Matt Burges to end the game.

The Redbirds return to action with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Dan Savas and JD Learnard will throw for Illinois State.
