CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Kyle Stanton went 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored to lead Illinois State's offense in a 10-1 series-finale victory against Austin Peay Sunday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park. ISU improves to 1-3 overall, while Austin Peay falls to 3-1.

The Redbird pitching staff teamed up to hold the Governors to one run on seven hits. Matt Schmitt earned the win in his first ISU start. The junior college transfer pitched a pre-determined four innings, allowing three hits without a run and striking out four. Austin Peay's Andy Cox suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs through 2.2 innings.

"I hope that today is an example of what we are really capable of," Illinois State head coach Mark Kingston said. "We showed speed, we showed power and we showed great defense. Everything you want to see out of a team, we showed today. So, hopefully, this is something we can build on."

Illinois State scored early and often, starting with a run in the first inning on a single by Stanton to score Ty Wiesemeyer. In the second innings, the Redbirds added a run with a Kevin Tokarski single that drove in Chad Hinshaw. The Redbirds broke the game open in the third inning, as Eric Aguilera hit a three-run home run, his first of the season, to increase ISU's lead to 5-0. ISU added another run in the fifth, as Tokarksi sacrificed-home Hinshaw.

Austin Peay tallied its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the frame with a single by Jordan Hankins that plated Dylan Riner. The Redbirds extended their advantage, as Mike Hollenbeck reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Matt Mirabal to score. Aguilera then drove in Hollenbeck with a sacrifice fly. Brett Kay scored on a fielding error in the seventh inning for ISU's final run of the game.

Illinois State will continue its non-conference schedule at Tennessee Tech. Game one of the three-game series is scheduled to start Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. in Cookeville, Tenn.
