ST. LOUIS – Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin named Illinois State senior cross country runner Kristen Zillmer a recipient of the MVC Leadership & Service Award, as announced Wednesday afternoon.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.

Zillmer earned the award based on her strong academic standing and selfless demeanor in the community. The special education major holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.56 and has captured AFNI Honor Roll accolades the last six semesters. Within the community, Zillmer coordinated a camping weekend with the Easter Seals and teammates, participated and organized the Student-Athlete Advisory Council’s (SAAC) trick or treat for canned goods event, volunteered for Day of the Dozer and Festival of the Trees, welcomed incoming freshman at the annual Curb Birds event and is a member of Recess Buddies and Special Olympics. The Park Ridge, Ill., native is also Vice President of SAAC, after being a representative for two years.

In addition to her academic success and community involvement, Zillmer helped the women’s team to a third-place Valley finish at this year’s conference meet. She was an integral part of the back-to-back Valley Championships in 2011 and 2012, earning All-Valley honors in 2011. Zillmer was also named to the MVC Cross Country Scholar Athlete-Team, as well as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team.
