Redbirds Earn Five Spots on Valley Scholar-Athlete Team

NORMAL, Ill. – After placing third in the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships, four women’s runners, along with one men’s runner were named to the conference scholar-athlete team, following competition last weekend at the Blank Park Golf Course in Des Moines, Iowa, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Women’s Athlete-of-the-Year Rachael Brewer, Kim Christensen, Kristen Zillmer and Kelly McShea earned the honor by placing in the top-20 at the conference championships, while holding a high academic standard of at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
Brewer captured a first-place finish with a 5K time of 17:26, two seconds ahead of Bradley’s Sarah McMahon. Christensen finished 14th with a time of 18:03, earning honorable mention accolades, while Zillmer and McShea finished 17th and 18th, respectively.
Brewer holds a cumulative 3.65 GPA with a degree in marketing, while Christensen boasts a 3.5 GPA, majoring in health education. Zillmer holds a 3.62 GPA in special education, and McShea sits at a 3.33 GPA in elementary education.
Tyler Morse was the lone Redbird male scholar-athlete, finishing 14th at the Valley meet with an 8K time of 24:59, earning honorable mention accolades. Morse currently boasts a 3.44 GPA, majoring in finance.
The Redbirds return to action in two weeks, as they travel to Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Meet hosted by Iowa State, Nov. 15.
