Zillmer Named Recipient of MVC Leadership & Service Award

ST. LOUIS - Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin named Illinois State junior cross country runner Kristen Zillmer a recipient of the MVC Leadership & Service Award (formerly the Good Neighbor Award) Monday afternoon. Zillmer was one of 10 student-athletes to earn this honor for the 2012 fall season.

Zillmer earned the award based on her academic prowess in the classroom and her selfless demeanor in the community. The special education major holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.63 and has been on the AFNI Honor Roll for the last four semesters. Within the community, Zillmer has volunteered at the Day of the Dozer, Recess Buddies, Easter Seals and the Hog Roast. The Park Ridge, Ill., native is a representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and is the community service contact for the women's cross country team.

In addition to her academic success and community involvement, Zillmer helped the women's team to back-to-back Valley titles for the first time since 1984, when the Redbirds won three-straight from 1982-84 (formerly the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference). A 2011 All-Valley performer, Zillmer was also named to the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Team, as well as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team .

Joining Zillmer, the 2012 fall honorees for this award include Emily Wolbers, Bradley, Cross Country, Senior; Brooke Boggs, Creighton, Volleyball, Senior; Averill Fuhs, Drake, Football, Redshirt Senior; Dani Langness, Evansville, Women's Soccer, Senior; Kylee Thacker, Indiana State, Cross Country, Senior; Chelsea Voet, Missouri State, Women's Soccer, Senior; Jennifer Willms, UNI, Volleyball, Senior; Bailey Yeager, Southern Illinois, Volleyball, Senior; Samantha Shukla, Wichita State, Cross Country, Junior.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.
