ST. LOUIS— After being tabbed preseason favorites, the Illinois State women’s cross country team has been picked to finish second in the pre-championship poll, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

The Redbirds travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the 2013 Missouri Valley Cross Country Championships, Nov. 2, at the Blank Park Golf Course.

The Illinois State women received a total of 89 points, tallying four first-place votes, while Bradley notched the first-place spot with 93 points and six first-place votes. Rounding out the top-three was Southern Illinois with 87 total points.

Rachael Brewer will look to lead the Redbirds in her final conference meet as a Redbird. Brewer paced the Redbirds, finishing second at the 2012 MVC Championship meet with a 5K time of 17:31, earning All-Valley honors. The Tuscola, Ill., native has led the ISU women all season, holding the third-fastest Valley 5K time of 17:27.16 (Country Financial Illinois State Invite). Kelly McShea, Kristen Zillmer, Kim Christensen and Haley Goers will look to round out the Redbird scoring lineup.

On the men’s side, Illinois State was picked to finish third, earning 59 points. The Salukis of Southern Illinois captured 80 points and eight first-place votes, while Bradley came in second with 60 points and one first-place vote.

Junior Ryan Rutherford will again look to lead the Redbird pack for the championship meet, after cracking the top-10 at the 2012 MVC Championships to earn All-Valley honors. The Bloomington, Ill., native recently broke the men’s 8,000-meter ISU record, running a 23:50 at Pre-Nationals at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.  Rutherford holds the second-fastest 8K time (23:50) in the Valley and looks to continue his success this Saturday, as he competes for his fourth consecutive top-20 finish.

Rutherford will team up with Tyler Morse, who holds the eighth-fastest MVC 8K time of 24:43.48, and Sean Senf to lead the Illinois State men’s team across the finish line.

The men’s 8K race is set to start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K race at 11:30 a.m.
