NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams will travel down the road to Champaign, Ill., Friday to compete in the Illini Challenge. The event, which will be the last regular-season meet before the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, will be held at the Illinois Arboretum. The women will toe the line for the 5K race at 4 p.m., while the men`s 8K race is set to begin at 4:45 p.m.

"Friday we will be racing other teams, but there is a lot of incentive to do well because we still have open spots on both teams for the conference meet," said head coach Jeff Bovee. "All of the athletes running this week will be fighting for those final spots. This is the last opportunity to make the postseason squad; and for some, it will be the last event of the season. There is a sense of urgency by those competing to do well and make a statement for our team and to go out and compete well against the other teams in hopes of gaining a spot on the conference team."

Running for the women's team will be juniors Lisa Devereux, Gina Kapusta, Jenny Kraakevik and Olivia Myers, while Samantha Bluske will be the sole freshman competing in the race.

On the men's side, sophomores Rich Eber, Nick Geyer and Kevin Grady, along with freshmen Blake Brooks, Patrick Morgan, Steven Regan, David Schumacher, Mat Smoody and Bryan Winek.

The women will be competing against Illinois and Northwestern, along with a few unattached entries, while the men will run against Illinois.
