ISU Cross Country Moves to No. 11 in Midwest Regional Poll
Oct. 5, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - The Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams were ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Midwest Regional Poll, as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday. The Redbirds were ranked No. 12 since Sept. 14.
"This is the highest regional ranking for the women since I have been here and the highest in quite a few years," said head coach Jeff Bovee. "For the men and women, we know we still have a lot to prove, and we need to keep focusing on training and maintaining our health in the coming weeks. Based on our training progression, we feel that we are just beginning to tap into our potential for the year. We are excited to look forward to the Pre-Nationals meet in two weeks."
The women are ranked above fellow Missouri Valley Conference members Bradley, Missouri State and Southern Illinois, who took 12th, 14th and 15th places, respectively. Wichita State was ranked in eighth place. On the men's side, ISU was bested by Valley foe Southern Illinois, who is in sixth place.
The Redbirds will compete in two weeks at the competitive Brooks Pre-Nationals Meet Oct. 17, in Terre Haute, Ind.
"We will see many of the Midwest regional teams at the Pre-Nationals meet in two weeks which will give us a better perspective of where we stand going into the postseason," said Bovee. "We ran against a highly competitive field at Notre Dame, but almost the entire field was teams from other regions across the country. We will also get to compete against the Wichita State women for the first time this season, whom are favored to win the MVC later this month and are the three-time defending champions. The men will have the opportunity to improve against in-state rivals Illinois and Southern Illinois as well."
