Cross Country Remains Among Top-15 in Regional Rankings

NORMAL, Ill.—After battling the hilly terrain and pouring rain at the Lee Bolstad cross country course in Minnesota, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams remain in the top-15 of the Midwest Regional Rankings, as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday.

The Redbird women climbed up one spot in the rankings to sit in seventh-place, after notching a 12th-place finish with a low score of 381 at the Roy Griak Invitational. Senior Rachael Brewer finished first for the Redbirds, capturing a 25th-place finish with a 6K time of 21:33.

Not only did Brewer finish in the top-25 of the Jack Johnson Women’s Golf Division, the Tuscola, Ill., native held her own with ranked opponents such as No. 5 Arizona, No. 12 Michigan State,  No. 19 Minnesota, No. 20 Vanderbilt, No. 21 North Carolina State, No. 26 Vanderbilt and No. 27 Butler.

The Redbird men currently sit in 14th in the Midwest region, after finishing 18th with a low score of 493 at the Roy Griak Invitational. Junior Ryan Rutherford led the way for the Redbird men crossing the finish line 16th with an 8K time of 24:46. Rutherford held his own with some of the nation’s top runners throughout the course of the meet and was only 20 seconds shy of the top-finisher, BYU’s Tyler Thatcher.
