Krapf Named Valley Athlete of the Week
Sept. 22, 2009
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior Scott Krapf was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
In his first race of the season and for a third-straight year, Krapf was the first Redbird to cross the finish line at the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships (Sept. 18). The Danville, Ill., native finished the race in fourth-place out of 334 runners. Krapf crossed the finish line in personal-best time of 24:28 to lead the Redbirds to a fourth-place team finish out of 31 teams from across the state of Illinois in the 8K race.
"This was Scott's first competition since the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships, and he starts off with an 8K all-time best," said head coach Jeff Bovee. "Scott has put in a lot of work since his injury. He started training late April and early May. He has slowly built his strength back up, and he is putting in a lot of 100-mile weeks. He still has a lot more in him, but for him to open up with an all-time best will give him a boost of confidence. I think this is going to be a great season for him."
The Illinois State cross country teams will return to action Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
