Mroczynski Named Valley Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS - After grabbing his second-straight top-five finish of the season, Illinois State senior Matt Mroczynski was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

The Pulaski, Wis., native led the Illinois State men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships in Normal, Ill., Friday, Sept. 17th. He crossed the finish line in fifth-place out of 344 runners with a time of 24:57 at the 8K meet. It was the second time this season that Mroczynski was the first Redbird across the finish line.

The meet was competitive on the men's side, with five teams being nationally- or regionally-ranked in their respective divisions. Those included No. 8 Illinois (NCAA Division I-Midwest Region), No. 12 Illinois State (NCAA Division I-Midwest Region), No. 2 North Central (NCAA Division III), No. 16 Olivet Nazarene (NAIA), and No. 19 McKendree (NAIA).

The Redbirds finished the meet behind Illinois, North Central, Illinois-Chicago and Augustana.

The Illinois State cross country teams will return to action Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky.
