Redbird Cross Country Heads to Saluki Invitational
Sept. 21, 2007
NORMAL, Ill-- - After finishing second (women) and third (men) at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship, head coach Jeff Bovee and a select group of Illinois State cross country runners will head to the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., Saturday. This race will allow some of ISU's cross country runners to gain a more competitive experience as they head into midseason.
"Even though we do not have our entire team going to Carbondale, I feel we are taking a solid group," said Bovee. "This race will be a great opportunity for this group to get more experience at a smaller meet to work on team racing and other running tactics."
Bovee is excited to see the racing capabilities of the Redbird women and how they match up with the competition.
"For the majority of the freshmen that we are taking, this race will only be their second race of the year," said Bovee. "I think that the women are starting to get really fit and might surprise some people with how well they do. They are going to compete very well and should be able to run together for the first couple of miles."
"We have Taylor, Ryan and Rob racing, and they are all returnees," said Bovee. "I think that our older guys will be able to bring along the two younger guys and show them how to race and run consistent with even splits."
The MVC will be represented by host Southern Illinois, Evansville and Illinois State. Other schools that will be in attendance include Eastern Illinois, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, McKendry College, Southeast Missouri State and Missouri Baptist.
"Overall, we are going to work on getting better and on gaining more racing experience," said Bovee. " This race will also give us an opportunity to look at other Valley teams and gauge how they are doing."
The women's 5K begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m.
