NORMAL, Ill.—The men’s and women’s cross country teams are prepared to host the first Country Financial Illinois State Invite Friday, Sept. 13, at the Illinois State Cross Country Course at the Weibring Golf Club. The women will compete in the 5K, which will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s 8K, set to start at 5:45 p.m.

Joining Illinois State in the field are Bradley, Eastern Illinois, UIC, North Central (men), Northern Illinois (women) and Northern Iowa.

“This meet is our first meet that we are putting all of our pieces together for the season,” head coach Jeff Bovee said. “We have some people coming off of long layovers, but overall I think we should be very competitive. This meet will tell us where we stand at the beginning of the year. Bradley is bringing in a really good team, as they won their meet last week. They are going to be a formidable challenge. So, it should be a fun meet.”

Competing for the women’s team will be Rachael Brewer, Sarah Castel, Kim Christensen, Krista DeCeault, Ellen Devereux, Sammi Donovan, Haley Goers, Ashley Kamin, Kelly McShea, Jackie Mink, Kimi Sanden, Kaley Ummel, Haley Verbeke and Kristin Zillmer.

Tabbed as the preseason Missouri Valley conference favorites, the Redbird women will look to Brewer, the 2012 MVC runner-up, to lead the pack. This marks the first race of the 2013 season for Brewer as well as Christensen, McShea and Zillmer, who will also be assets to the Redbird squad.

On the men’s side, ISU will send Aidan Askin, Jeff Bajema, Marcelo Burbano, Ryan Bybee, Kevin Dolan, Dave Eckhart, Jesse Hahne, Brendan Hoskins, Scott Janusick, Tyler Morse, Ryan Rutherford, Sean Senf, Paul Steeno, Travis Trevizo and Wes Ward.

This marks the first race of the season for the 2012 all-conference honoree Rutherford, as well as Dolan, Morse, Senf, Trevizo, Ward and Illinois transfer Eckhart.

“On the men’s side we are getting our guys going,” Bovee said. “Ryan Rutherford, Dave Eckhart, Tyler Morse and Sean Senf are going to open up their first competition. With Eckhart being a transfer from Illinois, we are excited to bring him on board and see how he can help our team. Our guys are going to need a few races to get sharp, but I think the training is going well. I believe this is our best guys team since the 2007 season. They are hungry to show people what they can do.”

Final results from the meet will be available after the conclusion of Friday’s races on the official Illinois State Athletics Website,, located on the cross country “In-Depth” tab under “Country Financial ISU Cross Country Invite,” or by visiting the ISU cross country sport home page.

Fans are also encouraged to come out and support the Redbirds, as it is their only home event of the season, and admission is free for everyone.
