NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to run in the Hawkeye Invitational. The two-race meet will kick off with the women’s 3K race at 6:45 p.m., and will be followed by the men’s 4K at 7:05 p.m.

Both the men and women will compete at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course.

“On both sides, we are looking for an opener to get some of our freshman and incoming transfers some experience, but also a few others, that have been around the block before, an opportunity to lead the team,” said head coach Jeff Bovee. “Yet, I think both groups are going to be very competitive and fighting for a win in this dual meet with Iowa.”

Competing for the women’s team will be Sarah Castel, Krista DeCeault, Ellen Devereux, Haley Goers, Ashley Kamin, Kimi Sanden, Kaley Ummel and Haley Verbeke

“I expect Krista DeCeault will come back and recapture some of her form from two years ago after redshirting this past year,” Bovee said. “She has been getting her fitness back and looking good, and we are excited to see her come back and get things rolling this year. I also think Sarah Castel will race well. She is a senior coming off of one our top-five finishes last fall that helped us win the Valley title last year. I expect to see her up there along with Ellen Devereux, who is coming off a very strong track season, and we need her to step up and provide a nice spark for our women’s team."

The men’s team will see five new faces on the course with freshman Jeff Bajema, Marcelo Burbano, Jesse Hahne, Brendan Hoskins and Paul Steeno running in the event. Aidan Askin, Scott Janusick and Ryan Bybee return to the squad for another season and will look to lead the Redbirds in this dual meet.

“On the men’s side we have a pretty young group. Jeff Bajema has been looking great in practice along with Jesse Hahne who has been looking very strong as well. I expect to see him up there along with Marcelo Burbano and Paul Steeno. As for our returners, I expect to see Aidan Askin provide some nice leadership up there in the front too.”
