NEW ORLEANS - Rachael Brewer and the Illinois State women's cross country team earned All-Academic status by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as announced Monday morning. Brewer earned individual status in addition to the team earning its ninth honor since 1995 and its sixth-straight since 2007.
A total of 115 student-athletes represent the 69 institutions that compose the group. Florida State led all schools in the country with five named to the All-Academic list followed by six schools (Kentucky, Duke, Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Arkansas) that tallied four on the list. In addition, the Redbirds were one of 200 institutions representing 30 conferences that earned this honor.
Head cross country coach Jeff Bovee thinks this speaks volumes to the dedication his team has not only to training, but in the classroom as well.
"Rachael's story is inspiring to see what someone can do with a lot of hard work and dedication," Bovee said. "She takes that same work ethic with her into the classroom. She is a person who goes all-in to make the best of every day. She loves life, and it is a great thing for her to be recognized for her efforts."
En route to this honor, Brewer helped the women's team to its second-straight Missouri Valley Conference Championship, finishing second with a time of 17:31 in the 5,000-meter race, earning All-Valley honors. The following week, she ran herself to a 19th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships with a 6,000-meter time of 21:22.08, earning All-Midwest Region honors. The marketing major holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.63.
Brewer is one of three individuals to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, joining the likes of Illinois State Athletics Percy Family Hall of Fame member Stacia Beste (1999, 01) and recent graduate-turned-professional, Aisha Praught (2011). Additionally, she is one of four Redbirds to earn all-region honors, and the third in the last two years (Beste- 1998-99, 01; Diana Ainsley- 2003; Praught- 2011; Elise Sigg- 2011).
As a team, the Redbird women hold a cumulative GPA of 3.49, ranking them No. 60 on the list of schools to earn this honor. This is the sixth-straight team honor under Bovee's direction.
"I am really happy for the team to earn its sixth-straight honor," Bovee said. "The dedication in the classroom mirrors the team's efforts in practice and races, and I am really proud of them. This is something that can help the team moving forward as we continue to recruit student-athletes for our program."
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012. In order to earn All-Academic status as a team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
