SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Illinois State women's cross country team took on a tough Missouri State Cross Country Course at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon, finishing eighth and posting the highest finish in school history in the last 15 seasons, and the first top-10 finish since 2003 when the team finished 10th.
With that eighth-place finish, the women's team was the top Valley and second Illinois school at the meet. Southern Illinois was the second MVC team to cross the line in 12th place. Northwestern was the only Illinois school to beat the Redbird women's squad, as they finished fourth. Illinois was the third Illinois school to finish, taking ninth, while central Illinois rival Bradley finished 20th.
With a stiff headwind over 20 MPH and two challenging hills, Rachael Brewer led the way for the Redbirds, finishing 19th with a time of 21:22.08, earning All-Midwest Region honors. She is the third Illinois State runner in two years and the sixth in program history to earn the honors. Elise Sigg was the second to cross the finishline for ISU on the 6,000-meter course, finishing with a time of 21:43.22 for 34th place.
Kelly McShea was the only other Redbird to crack into the top-50, as she turned in a 48th-place time of 21:58.09. Kim Christensen and Kristen Zillmer rounded out the top-five for Illinois State, finishing with times of 22:39.87 and 22:41:89, respectively. Other finishers included Sarah Castel (22:43.69) and Ashley Kamin (23:27.14).
The men's race saw the same tough conditions as the women's did, with temperatures in the low 70s. Ryan Rutherford was the top Illinois State finisher, turning in a time of 32:37.09, just 26-hundreths of a second faster than he ran in last years Midwest Regional Championship. Tyler Morse and Sean Senf were the only other Redbirds to compete on the men's side, as both finished their first 10,000-meter cross country race at the collegiate level. Morse turned in a time of 33:22.50, while Senf crossed in 34:20.81.
This concludes the cross country season for Illinois State. Throughout the course of the season, the Redbird women posted two first-place finishes, including a repeat at the 2012 MVC Cross Country Championships in late October. Four women earned All-Valley honors and Brewer became the sixth runner in ISU history to earn all-region honors.
The men finished as high as sixth as a team throughout the season, and saw one Redbird finish in the top-10 at the Valley Championships for all-conference honors (Rutherford).
