Peoria, Ill. -
With the varsity runners preparing to race at Pre-Nationals Saturday, the Illinois State men's and women's cross country team sent its junior varsity squad to compete at the Bradley Classic held on the Newman Golf Course Friday evening. The women's team, lead by sophomore Sarah Glowacki finished ninth, while the Redbird men keyed by sophomore John Navarro took 10th.
Iowa State's men's and women's cross country teams swept top honors at the fifth annual Bradley Classic. Top individual honors in the men's race went to Kevin Born of Iowa State who ran the course in 25:04, while Northern Iowa's Caedryn Schrunk won the women's race in 21:24.
"With the varsity squad over in Terre Haute this race was a great opportunity for our junior varsity to gain race experience," said head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "Hopefully they can build from this experience and it will benefit our team down the road."
The ISU women placed three women in the top-50 of a heated field of 163 competitors. Glowacki covered the 6K course in a season-best 22:29 to take 21th. Sophomore Gina Kapusta crossed the finish line in 22:40 (28th) and senior Natalie Scatena took 48th with a season-best time of 22:59.
"Sarah has been struggling though injuries all year so she should be happy with her performance today," said Forde. Even though she is not at 100-percent now, she has two weeks until the championships (State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships held Nov. 1 in Springfield, Mo.)."
Sophomore Jenny Kraakevik (23:09) and freshman Hannah Hogan (23:19) ran personal-bests to round out the ISU women's performances and to place 57th and 63rd, respectively.
Coming off injuries, Navarro and junior Rob Barkulis were the first-two Redbirds to cross the finish line for the ISU men's cross country team. Navarro ran a season-best 26:11 to place 33rd, while Barkulis clocked in with a season-best time of 26:39 (50th).
Freshmen Nick Geyer (26:43) and Kevin Grady (26:46); and junior Brian Syring (27:03) placed within 10 spots of each other to capture the 54th, 57th, and 64th positions, while rounding out the scoring performance for the ISU men's cross country team.
The Illinois State varsity cross country squads will compete tomorrow at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals on the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The ISU women will toe the line at 10 a.m. (CST) followed by the Redbird men at 11:50 a.m.
