PEORIA, Ill. - Rachael Brewer paced the Illinois State women's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Bradley Classic Friday evening with a second-place finish overall in record-setting fashion, as the Redbirds claimed their first team title of the 2012 season. Brewer's time of 20:44 in the 6,000-meter race is the fastest all-time in ISU history, second-fastest all-time on that course and shattered her previous career-mark (21:37.0) by 53 seconds, extending her Missouri Valley Conference lead at that distance.

Head cross country coach Jeff Bovee was pleased with the results of Brewer and the rest of the women's team.

"This was their best race of the season," Bovee said. "They responded well from a set-back two weeks ago at the Griak Invitational and rose to the challenge. They ran a great team race. Brewer is really starting to learn how to race and run up front. She has a fast learning curb and is soaking up everything from one race to the next. The team built some great momentum headed into the Valley Championship in two weeks."

Senior Elise Sigg claimed a top-10 spot as well, crossing the line in the seventh position with a time of 21:27. Sophomore Kelly McShea took 12th with a personal-best time of 21:36, while classmate Kim Christensen crossed in the fourth position for the Redbirds with her own career-best time of 21:58. Sarah Castel rounded out the top-five for Illinois State, also running a personal-best, finishing with a time of 22:13. As a team, the women scored 102 points, 12 fewer than that of second-place finisher St. Louis.

Ryan Rutherford led the men's squad with a 12th-place finish overall at the 8,000-meter distance, recording a time of 24:47, the second-fastest of his career. Junior D.J. Taylor claimed the No. 2 spot for the Redbirds with a personal-best performance of 25:35, while freshman Tyler Morse crossed the finishline shortly after with a time of 25:50. Andrew Sandoval was the fourth Redbird across the line in 26:28, and Scott Janusick rounded out the top-five for Illinois State with a time of 27:02. As a team, the men finished 12th with 296 points.

"I saw a major improvement with the guys," Bovee said. "Ryan gave the team a big boost with his solid performance, after taking the last few weeks off. I was impressed with Taylor's lifetime performance. Although we didn't finish where we needed to be, they fought hard. We need to use the next couple of weeks to continue to prepare and step it up a couple notches heading into the Valley."

The Redbirds return to action, Saturday, October 27, as they host the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships at the Illinois State Cross Country Course at the Weibring Golf Club. Fans can follow the live action on GoRedbirds.com or on Twitter via @ISU_Track_XC.
