PEORIA, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up competition at the Bradley Open Friday evening, after racing a wet and soggy course at Detweiller Park. Ryan Rutherford paced the men's squad with an 8K time of 25:21, finishing fifth overall, while Shannon Nemetz in her 2012 debut led the women with a three-mile time of 18:17, finishing in the 20th position.

Head cross country coach Jeff Bovee was pleased with the efforts of both squads.

"Both teams competed hard and ran well," Bovee said. "The conditions were tough after the rain we got, and both squads battled through. I thought Rutherford put together a solid first race of the season, while Tyler Morse improved upon his performance last week. Sean Senf, Aidan Askin and D.J. Taylor all ran aggressive and battled well. I am excited to see what they can do at our home meet next week."

Along with Rutherford, the Redbird men's top-five consisted of Morse (15th | 26:12), Senf (17th | 26:21), Askin (22nd | 26:39) and Taylor (29th | 27:08). Scott Janusick (27:24), Travis Trevizo (27:28) and Grant Grimshaw (28:20) all turned in solid times as well, as this was their first-ever 8K race.

On the women's side, Jackie Mink followed close behind Nemetz, taking the second position for the Redbirds and 29th-place overall with her 5K time of 18:49, improving upon her performance last week. Joining her in the top-five on the team was Ashley Kamin (30th | 18:50), Ellen Devereux (37th | 19:09) and Kimi Sanden (39th | 19:13). Meghan Duggan also strung together a solid performance with a 5K time of 19:48.

"I was really impressed with the improvement upon Mink," Bovee said. "She had a strong race and a break-out performance today. I was also really pleased with Nemetz and how strong and aggressive she was. I am excited to see how she will race once her fitness level improves. The rest of the women all made strides this week and looked better than they did a week ago. We need to keep building on these performances and see what we can do at the Illinois Intercollegiates on our home turf next week."

Both the men's and women's cross country teams return home, Friday, September 14, as they host the annual Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships on the Illinois State Cross Country Course at the Weibring Golf Club. The Redbirds will host an open 5K and 8K race at 4:15 p.m., followed by the women's 5K championship at 5 p.m., and then the men's 8K championship at 5:45 p.m. Awards will follow all events at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow the live action on or on Twitter via @ISU_Track_XC or @ISURedbirds.
