Women 3rd, Men 6th at Illini Challenge

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Eleven members of the Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams made their debut in a Redbird uniform at the Illini Challenge on the Illinois Arboretum Course Friday evening. The women's team finished in third place (76), while the men took sixth (163).
Redshirt freshman Kelly McShea set the pace for the Redbird women, crossing the line in seventh place in the 4K event with a time of 14:59. Newcomers Sarah Castel (15:12) and Kaley Ummel (15:13) followed in 11th and 12th place, respectively. Sophomore Ashley Kamin (15:50) was the next Illinois State runner to finish, followed by freshman Jackie Mink with a time of 15:53, rounding out the top-five runners for the Redbirds.
On the men's side, freshman Tyler Morse was the top-performer for Illinois State, as he finished the 6K race in 26th place with a time of 19:50. Andrew Sandoval and Scott Janusick were the next men across the line, finishing with times of 20:23 and 20:30, respectively. Freshman Aidan Askin (47th | 21:04) and Grant Grimshaw (49th | 21:13) rounded out the top-five runners for the Redbird men.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday, Sept. 7, as they travel to Peoria, Ill., to run in the Bradley Open. The women's 3-mile race is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m., with the men's 8K race to follow at 6:15 p.m. Fans can follow the action live on Twitter at @ISURedbirds and @ISU_Track_XC.
