NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams announced their 2012-13 indoor and outdoor schedules Monday. The track & field season will consist of 20 regular-season and three post-season meets, with two being hosted in Horton Field House and one at the Redbird Track & Field Complex.
The Redbirds will kick off their 2012-13 campaign at home in Horton Field House, Dec. 8, at the Redbird Open. ISU will then have a month-long break over the holiday and will return to action Jan. 12 at Indiana State for the annual dual meet. The following week, the teams will travel to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Elite Invitational, before returning home to host their last home meet of the indoor season with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Kent State, Jan. 26, at the Redbird Invite.
February brings five meets, the first two will be with the team splitting in two, Feb. 1-2. One group will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Mayo Invitational, and the other group will travel across town to Illinois Wesleyan for its invitational. The teams will rejoin the following weekend, Feb. 8-9, and hit the road for Allendale, Mich., to compete in the Grand Valley Invitational. The teams will then head to Lafayette, Ind., for the Purdue Invite, Feb. 16, serving as the last tune up before ending the month in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb. 23-24).
March brings an end to the indoor season, as ISU will only compete in three meets. The first two will be last chance meets (March 1-2), one at Iowa State and the other at Notre Dame, giving those an opportunity to hit that qualifying mark to head to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships the following weekend (March 8-9) in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Redbird will then go on a two-week hiatus where they will gear up for the 2013 outdoor season. The teams will split to open the outdoor campaign March 23, as part of the team will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Central Florida Invite, while the others head to Edwardsville, Ill., for a meet at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The following weekend, March 29-30, the teams will split yet again and either compete at the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto, Calif., or at the Southern Illinois Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
April brings just three meets to the forefront. The Redbirds make their first of three trips to Des Moines, Iowa, April 12-13, for the Jim Duncan Invitational. ISU then returns home to host the Redbird Spring Invite at the Redbird Track & Field Complex, before heading back to Des Moines, Iowa for the 104th running of the Drake Relays.
On May 4, ISU will travel to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Open, to serve as a final tune-up before the teams make their third and final trek to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 10-12. Those with the qualifying standards will have the opportunity to extend their season at the 2013 NCAA West Region Preliminary Rounds in Austin, Texas, May 23-25, with the top-12 in each event advancing to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
